The Romans invented the fork in Late Antiquity, during the Byzantine period. Prior to its invention you had to eat with your hands.
Eating with your hands is far from being unusual. A large proportion of the population of the word still eats with their hands these days: Indians, Muslims, peoples in Southeast Asia and Africans. For them it is a traditional thing. Only very westernised people use cutlery in these areas. The use of cutlery is a western thing. The outside the west the only alternative to eating with your hands is the chop sticks.
The ancient Romans ate the same way as we do, they put food in their mouths, chewed and swallowed. The only difference was that they did not have forks. Their food came to the table ready-cut in bite sized pieces and they used their fingers as we would use a fork. There was always a napkin and water bowl by each place to rinse the fingers.
Yes for most things, but they used bread to mop up sauces and spoons for soups et cetera.
Yes they did eat with there fingers because before there were no spoons or forks.
They barely used utensils. They used their hands for soup. For other stuff they used sticks and twigs.
