Yes. They bought tea. But the story you think you know is not the real one. They didn't dress up. This is part of the fable. The Boston Tea Party was a protest of the lowering of the cost of the British tea by the government and the East India tea company who had gotten a bail out from the crown in 1773. The smugglers in the colonies found the Dutch tea that they sold was higher in price than the British tea, so they staged the Boston Tea Party and others in harbors in the colonies ( Hamilton was one of the largest smugglers in the colonies and a founding member of the Son's of Liberty). The cost of tea also went as far back as the Navigation Acts and the restricting of trade to and from the colonies passed from 1650-1733. Tea was also taxed in 1767 in the Townsend Acts.
Because it brought in money, even though most of the colonists didn't buy tea from England anymore.
Because the colonists objected to the monopoly on tea and the import duty. Because the colonists did not like Britain put a tax on tea.
The colonists opposed the implications of the Tea Act, as the goal was to undercut the price of illegal tea. It was a passive-aggressive way of legitimizing the Townshend Duties. The colonists eventually responded to the tea act by dressing as Mohawk Indians and threw 342 chests of tea into the ocean. The reason why they were dressed as Mohawk indians is because they knew if they were to be discovered, they would suffer MAJOR consequences or be brought into a war. And finally the reason why the colonists threw the tea is because they got furious about British taxation.
The colonists did not have good water available because it was usually contaminated. Tea was important because the colonists would heat the water up and tea acted as flavoring.
