It had quite a big impact, the rich people wanted to buy products that came from different lands so they would pay (quite a bit) to make sure that they got them.

If trading stopped then hardly any money would be generated for ancient Rome and the Empire would falter. With no funding for armies, no weapons could be made the lands conquered by Rome could have been taken back (in an extreme scenario) and other countries would have suffered from no money coming from outside their country.
