There are several main differences between male and female Lions. These are: * Males weigh on average 416 pounds (189 kilograms), while females are just under two thirds the size and weigh 277 pounds (126 kilograms). The means the ratio between the size of the male and female is 3:2 retrospectively. * Male lions are typically around 48 inches (1.2 meters) high, but females are slightly smaller and normally only reach about 44 inches (1.1 meters). * The males of the species have a tuft of dark fur on the end of their tails, whereas the females' tails tend to be smooth, with no difference in the colouration at the top. * Males grow a large mane of dark coloured fur at around two years old. This mane surrounds the neck and can vary from a tawny tan to a black colouring. This mane makes the male lion look much larger than its female counterpart. The female lions do not grow manes and remain the same sandy colour all over, with little variation.
* Male lions tend to only live for around 12 years, whereas female lions can live up to eighteen years old. This means that females nearly always out live the males. * Female lions will live with the pride for life, but male lions will only stay with a pride for two to four years before they are either evicted or killed by a new male. Male cubs will leave the pride at the age of two or three, but female cubs will tend to stay in the pride for life. * Male lions hardly ever hunt; this is the duty of the female lions. While the females kill most of the animals for the pride to feed on, male lions defend territory from other lion prides or nomadic male lions.
