Non conventional Machining is a recent development in machining techniques. It is based on unconventional machining techniques using Laser beam, Electron beam, Electric arc etc. Conventional machining involves the direct contact of tool and work -piece, whereas unconventional machining does not require the direct contact of tool and wor piece. Conventional machining has many disadvantages like tool wear which are not present in Non-conventional machining.

Examples : Electric arc machining, Laser cutting , electro discharge machining, plasma cutting etc

Advantages of Non-conventional machining:

1) High accuracy and surface finish

2) no direct contact of tool and workpiece, so there is less/no wear

3) tool life is more

4 ) quieter operation

Disadvantages of non-conventional machining:

1) high cost

2) complex set-up

3) skilled operator required

  • 1. Basically conventional m/c have 2 axis,known as X & Y axis.There is also a Z axis along which only the bed moves vertically.the spindle along with the tool does not move,as it is fixed with the m/c body .But in case of CNC m/c,there are minimum 3 axis. Spindle moves parallel to Z axis.

  • 2. In case of conventional m/c the axis moves on the guide ways,but there is direct contact of metal surfaces so the lubrication effect is so less and wear & tear is high.The above phenomenon causes the machining of guide ways after a certain period,so the downtime machine is so high. But in case of CNC m/c there is a layer of PTFE(Poly Tetra Fluro ethylene) or turcide (50% bronze added with PTFE) is fastened on the guideways.After a certain time if this layer is got affected,then anew layer is replaced with the old one.Thus the downtime of the m/c is less than the conventional m/c

in conventional machines force is directly applied from tool to the work piece in non-conventional machines we don't apply the force directly from tool to the work piece. here we use different forms of energy which we applied in order to get desired profile like thermal energy, chemical energy etc. here tool need not to be harder than the work piece.

The non traditional machining can machine high hardness materials compared with traditional. Also in non traditional, the machining tool and work piece are not connecting together.
