A laboratory assistant would be helping process specimens as they come in. Meaning that they will order test in the laboratory computer system and label each one with the different test needed, centrifuge specimens and deliver to appropriate areas in the lab. A laboratory technician would be the ones running the actual tests on the instrument and verifying that results are accurate before they are reported out. Laboratory assistants do not generally need an any type of degree, just a high school diploma. Laboratory techinicians generally need a Associates degree in the field or something similar.
