The alchemists were the first chemists. They mixed chemicals, but also believed that magic would help them in their experiments and formulas. It didn't. But their chemical experiments eventually led to the science of chemistry.

The difference is alchemy relied a lot on spiritual connections to the earth and minerals and has a philosophical basis whereas chemistry is a lot more logical and factually based.

Alchemists main goal was ultimate wisdom & immortality, the philosophers stone was said to be created by the joining of "Sol" & "luna" (Sun & moon figures).

It's the predecessor of chemistry because they did discover compound and elements used now in the science world and properties of said compounds.

Isaac Newton, Paracelsus, Flamel were all respected alchemists.

When the word alchemy is used today it generally refers to the practice of transmutation: making gold and silver from base metals like lead, tin and copper.

In both the Middle Ages and the early modern period, however, the terms alchemy and chymistry (in Latin, alchemia or chymia) were often used interchangeably, and thus alchemy referred to a diversity of practices that included dye-making, Metallurgy, the manufacture of mineral acids, and other practical pursuits.

Until approximately 1725, there were very few natural philosophers and practitioners that would have made a clear distinction between alchemy and chemistry, and thus scholars today use the term chymistry to refer to the transitional period between alchemy and modern chemistry.

Over the course of the eighteenth century, alchemy was portrayed by enlightenment scholars as contrary to the goals and values of the period. Alchemy was equated with transmutation, mysticism and chicanery. While some alchemists in the early modern period were charlatans and cranks, very many famous "scientists" such as Robert Boyle and Isaac newton believed that transmutation was possible or that it had actually been accomplished and could be demonstrated.

Alchemist believed in magic. Chemists of today do not. The alchemists were the first chemists. But in addition to mixing chemicals, they also believed that magic would help with their experiments and formulas. It didn't. But their experiments led to the development of the science of chemistry.
