∙ 14y agoThe accuracy of GPS is not high enough to insure accurate placement of survey markers. Surveying requires measuring from accepted, fixed points for greatest accuracy. Also, the earth's surface is fairly plastic, allowing it to flex and stretch. While these movements are (usually) quite slow, they can affect survey measurements. In addition, legal descriptions of properties are usually expressed in measurements relative to accepted survey markers, not absolute latitude and longitude that you would get from a GPS unit. GPS can be a quick and easy augment to surveying, but don't expect the theodolite to completely disappear any time soon.
