Prone to damage Can be slow Generally ROM device
It doesn't always read the characters correctly. Sometimes it is because of the quality of print but there are also a lot of characters that get confused. Classic examples include the letter l and the number 1, the letter O and the number 0 and others. OCR will read content but not always layout. So your text may be read perfectly, but it is does not appear as it does on the original page. This is particularly common when the layout of the original page is more complex, like having columns of text or having images and diagrams in the text with textual headings under them. OCR is good for quickly getting a large amount of printed text into a computer, but there is often a lot of work to do after that. A fast typist with good knowledge of a word processor or desktop publisher could get some text typed and laid out just as quickly as another person who scans it and tries to lay it out themselves and remove all the errors.
The disadvantage of optical mark reader (OMR) is: In case of collecting large amount of text OMR complicates the data collection.
Many standards available so there is no one true 'standard'. barcodes needs labels and they need to be protected to be visisble for scanning, to preserve readability unlike RFID data sources.
