moneythe manufacturers don't earn millions & millions of dollars.

every time you purchase legitimate software, you are giving money to the sales people, shipping agents, manufacturer, designer, developer, etcetc

every pirated software program stops each of these people earning their share of the money from the software, however, some people may argue that they would never use it if they had to pay for it, & only use it if its free, but its still illegal if it has a copyright.

also to remember, if the developer & designer don't get paid for their work, they may no longer produce any products, & that leads to no new developments, & we all get stuck with old technology (yeah, like that's going to happen!)

Piracy does not create revenue for the creator, be it a band, or a software company, a movie producer, or whatever. Let's say it's a recording label for a new band. If their music is pirated, and even if the band is popular, the record label may drop them, despite the multitudes of downloads. They simply won't be as profitable.

Aside with the loss of revenue for the producers, thus reducing investments in innovation and business growth (that can be in some way compensated by the wider market adoption of the software), there are immediate practical risks.

Here are some:

Illegal copies of the software are not certified by the official producer, and often come with malware inside.

There is the risk of non compliance to the anti-piracy laws, thus putting at risks your company and your business.

Missing support: shoud you have any trouble, you cannot call anyone to solve the problem.

Etical and cultural risks: if you use and allow the use of illegal software, you accept to violate the rights of other people and push other to do so.
