There have been quite a few stages in American Literature, although America is a relatively young nation. Native American oral traditions and histories can be considered the first type of American Literature. From the 1600's until the 1800's the stage of literature would be the stage of Puritanism. From the late 1750's until around 1800's there was a stage of Rationalism, followed by Romanticism from 1800 until around 1860. From 1840 until 1860 Transcendentalism occurs, followed by Realism of 1850 until around 1900. From 1900 until about 1950 there is a period of Modernism. 1920 to 1940 is the Harlem Renaissance, followed by contemporary and post-modern writings from 1950 until the present.

How did American writers in the 1800s shape modern literature?

I don't think that it happened that way really. Americans didn't wake up one day and think... "hey, let's create a whole new division of literature for ourselves. Whoo-hoo!" It was more like people were writing, wherever they lived, and people were reading it... it wasn't until someone decided to teach classes about it, or market it, that it needed to be distinguished as "American" or "British" literature. As for why it was the 1820s... think that is an arbitrary date, but you couldn't really have American Literature before there was an independent group over here. I think 1820 is too late, because there are definitely American documents from before that... but again, it is just an arbitrary division that someone probably made to make it easier to teach an American Lit class.

First African American woman to win a nobel prize in literature?

Although Camus was the first African born winner he did not win the award as an African. He was considered French. The first African born, African winner was Wole Soyinka who was an African writer from Nigeria who won the Nobel Prize in 1986, and was the first African who ever won the award. He wrote an autobiography called, "The Man Died" in 1972.
