Diocesan priests (priests that are pastors of a specific parish) get paid, although they don't get paid much.

Religious priests (priests that are members of a religious order such as the Franciscans) don't get paid because they take vows of poverty.

There are two kinds of priests in the Catholic Church: diocesan priests, and religious priests. Diocesan priests belong to a diocese and receive a salary as determined by their bishop. Religious priest primarily belong to a religious Order or Monastery and receive no salary, although if their Order or Monastery sends them to work somewhere, like a diocese or institution, then they would earn a salary, but it would go directly to the Order or Monastery which would give the priest a stipend to cover living expenses.

Catholic priests are divided into two different categories: religious and diocesan. Diocesan priests are ordained to work in a diocese, usually at a parish, and are under a Bishop. They are paid a salary and provided housing, meals, and whatnot. Religious priests belong to a Religious Order or Monastery: like Jesuits, Dominicans, Benedictines, etc. They take vows that include poverty (or in the case of Benedictines and their spiritual heirs "Converso morum" (conversion of manners) which amounts to the same thing) and thus cannot earn any money thus no salary. Any salary is paid to their Order or Motherhouse, the Motherhouse, monastery, or whatever provides for the needs.
