Normally, the first visit to an Attorney or Lawyer is a free consultation. If you decide to hire the Attorney and he agrees to take your case you will have to give him money at that time which is called a retainer.

If you mean how does a lawyer announce their appearance in court, generally, for the sake of introduction and creating a sensible transcript of the proceeding, an attorney will state their name and client's name and/or party type as well as whether the client is present before the court and/or why the client is allowed to not be present. Is a lawyer the same thing as an attorney?

An attorney is usually somebody that has passed the bar exam within their state and can represent you in a court of law. A Lawyer is somebody that is trained in law and can give legal advice but usually cannot represent you in a court of law. They are not yet excepted into their states bar. So an attorney can be a lawyer but a lawyer is not qualified to be an attorney even though a lot of times in the U.S we use the term as if they were the same.
