Cows are considered Sacred in Hindu religion. The cow like all animals is sacred because it is a reincarnation of human souls. Many hindu's choose a vegetarian diet because of this belief. The cow is treated as holy because he/she provides strength to plow the fields, milk to give nutrition to humans and leather from their skins upon death. Because of all they provide cows are considered the mothers to humans and therefore should be treated with respect and never eaten.

Hindus do not worship cows, they respect them. The reason for this is because they are a symbol of life and they represent all living creatures (which they also respect). The cow does not take much from the earth as all it ever eats is water and grass and often some other treats etc that it may be fed.

ANS#2:

Cows have been fin India for thousands of years because of their gentle nature and their life-sustaining abilities. They are allowed to roam free and it is considered a heinous act to kill a cow. As such, Hindus do not eat beef.
It is not correct to say Hindus worship cows or consider them holy. Generally, Hindus do not eat beef because In times when food is scarce it would be shortsighted to kill a cow for food in the short run when it can provide milk for many years.Cows are thought of much like family pets in this country, or a horse to a horse lover. We don't eat dogs and horses in this country. Hindus don't eat beef.

HINDUISM, COW AND BRAHMAJNANA:In this modern era, to make Hinduism compatible with Modernism, we take the literal meaning of the Vedic mantras. We don't bother to know the symbolism involved and the actual meaning of the mantras.

COW AND RIG VEDA:

To understand what cow is, we must know the seven forces (Rig Veda 1.10.90 -14 and Manu Smriti -1.19 & 1.20) Hindus worship.

They are,

1. Dreaming force - Indra

2. Illusory force - Shakti

3. Creative force - Brahma

4. Stabilizing force - Vishnu

5. Determination force - Shiva

6. Status altering force - Shani

7. Compulsive force - Yama.

The cow symbolizes the illusory force. This is clearly evident from Cow 1.6.28 -3 (Rig Veda). According to this, cow can't be stolen, injured by a thief or taken away by friend. In this mantra cow gives milk to Indra.

This indicates that cow symbolizes the illusory force and has nothing to do with the cow that gives us milk and which we worship.

COW - THE SYMBOL OF ILLUSORY FORCE:

Shiva can forgive and help us if and only if we are logical.

Vishnu can help if we are natural (half logical and half reasonable)

Brahma can help if we are reasonable.

The illusory/ Shakti force, like mother, would forgive and help us even if we are illogical and unreasonable. Since, like mother, cow gives milk the cow has come to symbolize the illusory force.

Since the illusory force is our last defense in the real world, Hindus worship cow that symbolizes this force.

First of all, it is not the "indians" who believe the Cow is holy. Hindus believe the cow is a sacred and holy animal and is the most sacred of all the animals. Hindus believe that although humans have power over animals they must use this power to care for them and ensure their safety on God's earth.
