The fundamental document on which all of Judaism rests is the Tanakh, which is the "Old Testament" in its original language, Hebrew. The books go from Genesis through 2 Chronicles. These books ARE the history, philosophy, culture, and evolution of the Jews as a distinct people. Without the Tanakh, the Jewish people and their way of life don't exist, and never would have. It's a bit of an awkward question to contemplate: "Do you believe in your brain, heart, and spine ?"

It depends on your definition of the word "believe". Jewish people look at the Hebrew Bible in many different ways, but all practicing Jews can agree that the Hebrew Bible is central to Jewish faith, custom, and tradition.

Believe in god but not the Bible?

Is it possible? According to the Bible ~ it is possible to believe in God and not the Bible. The Bible was written by human men, who some Christians believe was written by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. However, in the case of the Jewish Faith. Although many of the portions of the Old Testament of the Holy Bible is also believed within the Jewish Faith. The New Testament is not part of the Jewish Faith. Some Jews do believe that Jesus Christ was a Prophet, but will never, acknowledge Him as the true Son of God. So, how do Jews get into Heaven if they don't believe in the Holy Bible or convert to Christianity? Simple. Long before Jesus Christ ever came to this world ~ the Jewish Nation was and will always be "God's Chosen People." The Bible is basically a guide book to doing the right things in life. Also, no where in the Bible does it say, "You must believe in the Bible, and every line it states." The belief in God is what gets you into Heaven, and that's also stated in various places of both the Old Testament and New Testament of the Bible.

What made Jews believe that they were messiah?

Jews do not believe they personally are the messiah. Rather, Jews believe they were chosen to introduce ethical monotheism (the belief in one God) to a pagan and polytheistic world. When Judaism emerged as a religion, it was in fact the first to promote the worship of only one Deity. In the Hebrew Bible (what Christians refer to as the "Old Testament" and Jews call the Tanakh), it says that God (whom Muslims call Allah) will send the messiah, but it does not say when this will occur. Since the idea of a promised messiah can be found in the Hebrew Bible, it is not surprising that some people believe he will be Jewish.Christians believe Jesus (who was in fact Jewish) was the promised messiah, but Jews do not agree with this. Jews believe the messiah has not come yet, and they do not believe Jesus did what the messiah was supposed to do. So Jews wait for the messiah, who will be sent when God decides to send him. What religion the messiah will be is up to God; but the Bible clearly states that in the final days, there will be no more prejudice and everyone will unite to worship the one God together.

Do both Catholics and Jews believe in original sin?

No, Jews do not believe in the concept of 'original sin'. This concept is a creation of the Christian Church. Although the Christian Old Testament was based on the Jewish Bible (the Tanach), the OT was altered to support the teachings of Christianity. The story of Adam and Chavah are interpreted very differently by Jews and Catholics.
