Certainly not. Most democracies have many political parties vying for, or actually having, representation in their parliaments. Two party systems are rare.

One party systems are generally not democratic at all by definition, indeed they are the opposite to a democracy -- being Authoritarian states. Democracy is about choice; in one party states they have abolished the opposing parties meaning there is no choice and the one officially approved party rules the country as dictators.

France has a pluralist democracy system. This is whereby there is competition for all who are interested in leadership.
Yes. It minimizes the risk of a plutocratic oligarchy - within a so-called democracy, such as is the case in the U.S. at this time. Less wealth is concentrated in the top 1% of the population and more social services are available to the populace at large. A two-party or multi-party system is a must, in any form of democracy, a social democracy included. Unfortunately, all forms of government are at risk of being corrupted. This will probably always be the case.
