Baptists believe that the mother of Jesus was a virgin and that the conception of Jesus was a miracle. They do not pray to Mary because they believe that each person has the same right as a child of God to pray directly to God. Many Baptists believe that there is a Holy Trinity that is inconceivable by man that includes God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit and they are all the same being yet separate.
Baptists believe in Mary as the mother of Jesus. They also accept that she was a virgin when she conceived Jesus due to the miraculous act of the Spirit of God.
However, there are a number of beliefs about Mary that Baptists in general would reject.
1. Baptists do not believe that Mary was virgin born herself. They would believe that Mary was born to two human parents.
2. Baptists do not believe that Mary was sinless. They would view her statement in the Magnificat about God being her savior, as pointing out her need to be redeemed by God.
3. Related to #2, Baptists would not see Mary as "co-redemptrix." They would say that we are saved through the act of Jesus as God's Son. Mary does not save us, but is in fact in need of Jesus as her savior.
4. While Baptists believe that Mary is the mother of Jesus, and that Jesus is God's Son, they would normally reject that description of Mary as the "Mother of God." The reason is that it can be confusing to people.
5. Baptists do not believe that Mary was a perpetual virgin. When Scripture notes that Joseph did not have intercourse with Mary until after Jesus was delivered, Baptists would view that meaning that she was not a virgin later, but had other children. They would then, relatedly, say that James, Jude, and others who appear be Jesus (half) brothers in the Gospels, are indeed brothers... not cousins or something else.
6. Baptists do not believe the Mary ascended to heaven in a unique way. Rather, they believe that Mary most likely died and was buried as others were.
In summary, Baptists believe that Mary was a young godly Jewish woman who had the honor to be used by God in a unique way, as the (virgin) mother of Christ. She was blessed, and is certainly deserving of honor, but Baptists would reject some of the other things (as described above) as things added by members of the church.
