friction makes riding a bike possible.

When the tire presses on the ground, friction acts against the rotation of the tire, fixing the lowest point of the wheel on the floor.

This force is transmitted to the axel of the wheel and is what propels the bicycle forwards.

You can reduce friction in a bicycle by:

  • Service the bearings so that they run as smooth as possible.
  • Putting oil on the chain and also the gears. (it'll make the pedalling smoother)
  • Polish your bicycle so that it will feel smoother
  • Bend forward while cycling to reduce drag (air friction)
  • Wear sleek, slick pants and shirt to reduce drag

Well.. There is surface friction from the tires on the road, there is air friction from the bike itself ,, more air surface friction if your on it.. Then there is mechanical friction through the resistance of the, chain, bearing assembly grease in axle.

Without friction, the tires would just spin on the ground, you feet would slip off the pedals and holding on to the handlebar would be really, really difficult. Nuts and bolts would come undone.

the breaks use pads which press on the wheel to make it stop from turning the friction is the force that makes the pressing work
Friction between the moving parts and the fixed parts of the bike's brake setup is what slows you down by turning kinetic energy into heat.

As you paddle your bicycle, the tires rotate. The tires have special pattern on them. So when it rotates, it creates friction between tire and the road and the bicycle moves forward.
