Yes, all cops are required to. The guns vary depending on department. But most use .40 S&W. or .357 SIG. They carry a shotgun in the boot/trunk. Ones that work in high crime areas, also carry an AR-15 (.223) or police version of the M-16.

Ordinary policemen on the beat do not carry guns in the UK. The only time that members of the public are likely to see policemen with guns is at major airports like Heathrow and Gatwick because of terrorist threats. However, armed response units are cruising in vehicles at all times and can be at the scene of an incident very quickly.

In the majority of the nations of the world, yes, police officers routinely carry sidearms (and in some countries, even heavier weapons) as regular part of their equipment. A notable exception to this is Great Britain.

There is no situation in which a regular police officer will be given a firearm. Instead, the UK has a dedicated armed response division, which are deployed if there's an emergency which requires an armed officer. They will also patrol sensitive areas, such as an area where the prime minister is visiting.

The regular every day police dont carry guns, but they have special units at airports and important landmarks (windsor castle etc.) that carry assault rifles
