Overall, physicians hold widespread views about euthanasia and Right to Die issues. Their views match the wide-ranging views of the general population because like with anyone, physicians' moral upbringing, religious beliefs, and professional ethics all affect these kind of decisions. However, doctors have an additional ethical conflict. They trained to heal and to do no harm. It can be very challenging for physicians to modify their do no harm ethic to support euthanasia. Ironically, though, the older the patient, the more that doctors are apt to give up on healing; some even pressure families to let an elderly loved one "go". This would rarely be done with younger patients, unless there is indisputable scientific-medical evidence of brain death or body trauma that no one could possibly recover from. But physicians will try to save lives of younger persons, even if that means the person is permanently paralyzed, unable to swallow, etc. So there are a lot of conflicts about life-death and assisted deaths, not just in society but also among physicians and nurses.
