Well they do NOT breathe air, they just can be out of the water because they store it in their shell to breathe. This means that if you want to take your hermit crab out, you must give it a bath -no soap- so it can get breathing water in its shell.

I had read on another web site that Hermit Crab breath with a modified Lung, or gill. From my experience's my crab eat with there pinchers. They delicately pinch a small portion an bring it to their mouth. I also found that they will eat anything you put in the Crabitat. I truly believe Plastic Plants are not good for the Crab at all. I found the Crab pinched the ends or edges of the plastic plants! I do not use Plastic of any kind in my Crabitat!

Hermit crabs breathe underwater with the use of gills. When ashore they can continue to use the gills so long as they remain moist. There are some species of terrestrial hermit crabs, but they prefer higher humidity environments for this reason.

Stiffed gills allow hermit crabs to get oxygen. they are gills though, not lungs, so it is still harder for them to breathe in air, rather than in water. Some wild hermit crabs life in tropical places that are humid. the moisture keeps their gills wet so they can breath easier.

Do you need to feed your hermit crab if it bites to much?

Hermit crabs do not bite, they pinch. When a hermit crab pinches you that means that they are intimidated and stressed out, and possibly hungry. In your crabitat there should always be fresh food available to your hermit crab so it does not starve.
