Then you will end up with two magnets, each half will be a new magnet, with both a north and a south pole.

But the magnet will be weaker.

it will repel, when put together as it was before broken, but it will attract if one piece is backwards to how it was when broken

How do similar and opposite sides of a magnet interact with other magnets?

Opposite ends (one north pole, one south pole) attract one another; equal ends (two north poles; or two south poles) repel one another.

Why do magnets not always attract?

Magnets may not always attract if the opposite ends are not towards each other. For a magnet to work, the possitive end has to attract the negative end and visa versa. Failure of these ends meeting means the magnets will not work.

How do the two ends of a magnet affect attraction and replusion?

The magnet only attracts magnetic materials like iron and tin.The two eds are called poles, one is the north pole and the other one is the south pole. The pole is an end of a magnet that has the highest attraction. The pole will attract things only which behaves like the opposite pole and would repel the like poles.

What happens if two magnetic poles are the same?

Repulsion. Magnets do not like to join like poles together, which is why a north and a south pole attract each other.

Can a magnetic field be both attractive and repulsive?

If you have any two magnets, you can always make them attract each otheror repel each other. It just depends on how you arrange them.Every magnet has two ends, with exactly opposite characteristics. If you hanga magnet up from a thread and wait until it settles down, one end points northand the other end points south. If you stick labels on the ends to identify them as the ' N ' end and the ' S ' end, then the ' N ' ends or the ' S ' ends of any two magnets always repel, but one' N ' end and one ' S ' end of two different magnets always attract.

Which ends repel on a magnet?

Two of the same, i.e., south and south repel or north and north. South and north attract.

What is a pole on a magnet?

The poles of a magnet are the ends of the core of the magnet, where the lines of force emerge. An experiment with iron filings shows the lines of force, by putting a sheet of paper over the magnet and sprinkling fine iron filings. This is an easy thing to do at home. For a bar magnet the poles will be at opposite ends. If you have two such magnets you can experiment and find that like poles repel, opposite poles attract.

Attract vs repel on magnets?

North + North/South + South = RepelNorth + South/South + North = AttractA.An iron pipeB.An aluminum wire carrying currentE.An electromagnet

What is the meaning of the science word repel?

To repel something is to keep it away. To attract something is to draw it towards oneself. "Repel" and "attract" are words usually used to describe magnetism. Magnets have two opposite ends, or "poles", called "north" and "south". When the north pole of one magnet gets close the north pole of another magnet, they repel each other. When the north pole of a magnet gets close to the south pole of another magnet, they attract each other. Chuis attarct is when to magnets push together like the north and south magnet attract. repel is when to magnets pull apart from each other like the north pole and the north pole repel

Why do magnets repel and attract?

The space around a magnet is called a magnetic pole. The same ends of magnets have the same poles so they repel each other. Different ends are not the same so they want to attract.

Can you place a magnet over another magnet?

yes if you place one set of ends together they will repel and if you do it the other way they will attract it really cool to feel the magnetic pulll of the magnets

What are Opposite ends of a magnet called?

The opposite ends of a magnet are called poles. All magnets have them.

Do a north and a north part of a magnet attract or repel?

Like polarities repel; unlike attract. So the north ends of two magnets repel each other, as do two south ends, while a north end and a south end mutually attract. North + North = Repell South + South = Repell North + South = Attract South + North = Attract
