I'm almost positive it is soil or else the plant would absorb too much water and die.

Hydroponics is the method of growing without soil - works quite well in controlled environs. Some vegetables for the market are grown this way.

plant need water to grow well and strong and heathy they also need sunlight to grow well to if you give them to much water they will drown and die and willl start to smell very bad like someone farted.
