Police use standard technologies for drug testing. On roadside, there is the basic breathalyzer test. When they take you to CBT (Central Breath Testing), there are other options such as blood or urine tests. There are also oral swabs that can be used in the field to detect substances such as recent marijuana usage.

∙ 13y agoSurly prior to employment (my county sure does), but I don't know if random drug testing is common. I actually stumbled upon this question looking for the answer to the random screening question... maybe I will be able to provide a better follow up answer in a few weeks.

Most departments use the random urine test however many North American police departments are now seeking to use hair follicle testing which is more accurate and much harder to cheat on.
