You should read the book. Most of the characters looks are described in the first Chapter so it won't kill you to pick up the novel.

P.S. The Movie didn't copy the characters looks very well, so don't try that shortcut.

yes because slang is abundant and their actions depict real life teenagers-smoking, hanging out in gangs,etc.
