Technically, any animal/insect with a mouth can bite. However, only some bites are poisonous. Yellow jackets can bite you but they normally wouldn't and it wouldn't be poisonous. Yellow jackets transfer venom into the body via stingers. So to harm you they would have to sting you. [Yellow jackets can only sting once, then they die] A yellow jacket could bite you because they have mandibles, sort of like teeth (you could look them up on Google).

So to sum it up they could bite you, but it wouldn't harm you.

With honey bees, swarming is the method of splitting a colony that is getting overcrowded. Yellow jackets (wasps) and bumble bees do not live in such large colonies and, in any case, they only live for one season so they do not have any need to swarm.

Most yellow jackets may buzz around a person's legs or clothing (bright colours attract them). But usually they only sting when threatened e.g. getting to close to nest, being sat upon, getting trapped under cloths.

Nevertheless, nests must be sprayed with Raid or other poison and the area sealed off (if in, under, or around dwellings, garages/workrooms or sheds) because the wasps will more than likely expand on the nest increasing the chances of getting stung.
