Yes, recycling consumes much energy and money. It actually costs most governments more money than it saves them. Consider recycling trucks, plants, employees, etc. Also note that nearly half of everything you put into recycling actually ends up in a land fill.

∙ 14y agoMany US states charge a deposit of 5 or 10 cents per can/bottle at the time of purchase, and then refund it if you take the empty container to a recycling facility. However, you're not really getting "paid" so much as simply getting your own money back, since you had to pay the deposit to begin with.
That said: I know of at least one research group in grad school that bought a microwave oven for their office by collecting all the empty soda cans left in the large lecture hall after classes for a semester. They hadn't paid the deposits in the first place, so in a sense they were getting "paid" to clean up the lecture room and recycle the cans.
