No, Jesus wittnessed to the thief on the cross, and said he would be with him in paradise. No indication that he was baptised so no, you don't have to.Salvation is not in baptism but through faith in Jesus Christ. So, its not essential for salvation. We are commanded to submit to it for its an outward expression of an inner change.

According to Christian theology, yes, you must be baptized to go to Heaven. Virtuous pagans, according to Dante's Inferno, were consigned to a relatively pleasant area on the outskirts of Hell. I don't think so. God is our father...would your parents send you to hell? Baptist groups have different beliefs in this area. Southern Baptists generally do believe you must be baptized into the Baptist Church to be saved. General Baptists do not believe this, but do believe a person should be baptized as part of the persons Christian walk.

The Church has always recognizes the extraordinary circumstances of baptism of desire and baptism of blood. In the first instance, someone would be baptized if they desired to be a Christian (or their parents desired it) and were intending baptism, but died before the actual sacrament was administered. In modern times, this would include a family on the way to Church to baptize an infant that was killed in a car crash on the way to Church. Baptism of blood involves someone martyred for the faith, their blood baptizes them as they are dying. The Church has always recognized this as there were many martyrs for the faith who were unable to be physically baptized with water before being killed. You have to recognize that when God binds us as human beings to baptism, we are all bound, but He is not. Because we are bound, we must do the best we can to make sure everyone is baptized, the rest we trust to God's mercy, but we must never rely on God's mercy to make up for what He expects us to do.
