Unfortunately, yes, you do. I had to do this with my '01. The fuel pump is a very expensive plastic assembly located inside the fuel tank.

disconnect the large rubber hoses, fuel lines, and accessible wires from the fuel tank, pull out the gas tank (not fun), disconnect all the remaining wires and fuel lines from the top of the pump (which is accessible from the top of the fuel tank), remove the circular metal piece that holds the pump in place (a hammer and screwdriver work well for this), and then pull out the fuel pump. To install the new one, just do everything in reverse

the easiest way is to take the bed off. and use a flat-head screw-driver to spin off the ring that holds down the fuel sending unit then pull the fuel sending unit/fuel pump unit straight up and pull off the fuel pump itself then put it all back takes about an hour

User Avatar

its a metal cylinder bolted to the driver side of the frame (on the inside of the frame rail). You have to use a wrench (or in some versions loosen the clamps and pull the hoses off) to unscrew the fuel lines on each side then loosen the clamp on it then slide it out and replace. On a 2001 it is part of the fuel pump module, you have ot remove the tank, the pump, abd then can replace the filter.
