no i read the first and the third and they still made sense. u just have to knowa few of the characters from the first book
you don't have to, but it is recomended. Not reading the first one would leave confusion to all the books.
Not reading the second one would affect knowledge of the fourth book.
Not reading the third would also lead confusion to the fourth, but not much, as only one major event is continued towards it.
Not reading the fourth one... Well... I don't think would affect much (but little details), but IMO the fourth book was the best in the series.
Not reading the fifth would not cause much, but cause character confusion ( three new characters), time confusion, and also how Artemis got his "ability". Other than those three, it wouldn't affect much
And not reading the sixth before the seventh, I don't think that would cause much confusion, except for the fact that it tells you how Artemis knew about fairies.
And by not reading, i meant not reading before that book.

∙ 8y agoIt is highly recommended to read them in order. Apart from some things being more confusing if you read them out of order, you sort of spoil the surprise of an earlier book, when this is mentioned (explicitly or implicitly) as "past history" in a later book.

∙ 11y agoNo, you don't! In some types of books (books about certain characters, I mean; in this case, the books about Rincewind) there is a small amount of continuity, but the books are mainly just things you can pick up in any order.
But, it does help to read them in order since some events from previous books continue into the next few books (ie The Colour Of Magic and The Light Fantastic).
However, it's not crucial that you do. The stories are still understandable.

Sorta...the Alex Rider series all have the same basic story line in all 9 books: Some criminal plans to do something horrible to the world and Alex, a 14-year-old spy, stops the bad guy and saves the day. However, the fifth book, "Scorpia" has its specific sequel; the ninth book, "Scorpia Rising." So you should probably have read the fifth book to understand the ninth book, passing three other books in doing so. As far as the others, "Stormbreaker" I think should be started first since it starts the whole series, "Point Blank" and "Skeleton Key" I suppose you could get by without reading in order, "Eagle Strike" should come next since it sets up the plot for "Scorpia", then "Scorpia," you don't have to read "Ark Angel," "Snakehead," or "Crocodile Tears" in order, and then finally the last book, "Scorpia Rising" which comes back to "Scorpia." So, in all, no I suppose you don't have to read the whole series in order, but you should read "Stormbreaker," "Eagle Strike," "Scorpia," and "Scorpia Rising" in that order if you're going to read the series at all. But when you'd jump from the first book to the fourth book, there are some brief flashback moments to the books you would've skipped. It's nothing major, but if you get hear a name you've never heard before, it probably was just Alex reflecting on a mission in an earlier book. (But I recommend reading the whole series in order, it's a very good series and the remaining four books you don't have to read in order are just good to read anyway.)
