Hey Grady==You don't say what kind of car you have but most don't have relays on the compressor. Ihere is a cycling switch on the accumulator that when it is low will keep the compressor from engaging. GoodlukcJoe
A car need to be repaired if it is smoking near the compressor. There might be something seriously wrong with the car.
Make sure your setting inside is on "max" or "recirculate". If so, and the compressor doesn't kick on, then disconnect the low pressure cut-off switch usually located on or near the accumulator canister. Use a paper clip or jumper wire to jump across the two terminals on the connector. This should kick the compressor on and pull in the freon. MAKE SURE YOUR HOSE AND CAN IS CONNECTED TO THE LOW SIDE CONNECTOR CLOSEST TO THE ACCUMULATOR!! Make sure your setting inside is on "max" or "recirculate". Yes you need an air compressor that will give you an adjustable air suspension.
locate compressor on left inner fender under air filter box which will need to be removed unplug wire at compressor there are three nuts holding the compressor in. You get at them from under the car. lift out old compressor.
You need to pick up a 134A Install kit at autozone ,walmart ect. Put the hose on the low side port on the accumulator smaller port] start car turn can upside down ,after pressure in system builds up compressor will kick on. Should have a sticker on heater box that tells you how much feon system holds. But if feon is gone you probably has a leak.
the compressor is on the left side of the engine compartment (drivers side) front under air filter box
the compressor is located under windshield washer tank and airfilter box both need to be removed. then unplug wire at compressor, there are three nuts 10mm holding the compressor in you get at them from under car.
you should check the belts. Sounds like one is a little loose and slipping. or the system may be over-charged
