Your cervical opening is normally plugged-up with thick mucus to stop anything getting through into your uterus where it may lead to infection. Leading up to ovulation this mucus changes to flow into the vaginal canal to protect sperm from the acidic environment of the vagina and give it a medium through which to swim. You will see this as an egg-white type clear mucus around ovulation.
