Yes! These pin bearings are surrounded by high temp grease, the grease is kept where it should be by rubber seals. Once these seals are worn out, and cracked, or broken completely, the grease finds its way away from the bearings, and then you have metal on metal contact. There are four parts to a bearing system on each wheel; the inner bearing, outter bearing, and racers for both. the bearings run along the racers, and without the proper amount, and quality grease, these pin bearings with soon break the racer/lose bearing from retainer/lock up/or just simply over heat and STOP the wheel from turning. so, replace those bearings, and get NEW high temp bearing grease and chock it FULL. this will prevent any future problems.

In most cases wheel bearings cannot be repaired and must be replaced. Remove the tire and wheel. Remove the axle end cap. Remove the wheel bearing seal. Remove the wheel bearings. Reverse the process to install the new wheel bearings.

There are many dissimilar vehicles vehicles out there called Chevrolet Malibu, and front/rear wheel bearings can be different. Is your Malibu FWD or RWD? If fwd: no. The wheel bearings are ball-in-cage type bearings that are an integral part of the hub-and-bearing assembly which must be replaced as a unit. If rwd: maybe. The front wheel bearings are taper bearings held in place by a nut with cotter pin. The rear rear wheel bearings (axle bearings) are in fact pressed into the axle tube.
The front wheel bearings and hub come as one piece. The bearings alone are not serviceable.
Repacking wheel bearings is part of regular maintanance on vehicles that require such. They are replaced only if needed because of wear or lack of maintanance.
You supposed to check if there are any play in the wheels at 90k miles for sure. If there is any play (wiggling, back and forth) then you need to replace your wheel bearings. Mine went out at around 85k miles.
Always replace inner and outer wheel bearings on the same wheel at the same. You don't necessarily have to replace the bearings in both wheels at the same time, though it's not a bad idea, but always inner and outer on the same wheel at the same time.
