The government body responsible for air-travel security is the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), whose parent agency is the Deptartment of Homeland Security.
The TSA levy a charge of $2.50 per boarding, with a maximum of two charges per one-way trip, which is collected at the time the ticket is booked by the airline who then pass on the charges as a contribution to passenger screening and security. The fee does not increase the closer the booking is made to departure.
This is the only direct fee payable by passengers.
