Yes, it runs off GMT time, which is a real time zone - the Primary World Timezone, in fact. At 7:00am GMT the horses age and the game updates for a new day.
In real life, yes, a horse at work will need more protein than he will when not at work. Not exactly... You just have to make sure that they are getting the amount of food needed. On Howrse you can't give them 'extra protein'!
To the top right of your page you will see both your own local time, and next to it the GMT time which Howrse goes by. These times update automatically.
It does work, though you have to refresh the page for it to keep up to date. I am Seren02 on Howrse.
Yes. The are Huge horses. They are work horses also known as Draft horses along with Perterons and Kleidsdales.
That's impossible to answer without knowing your personal timezone. GMT time zone conversions are easily accessible on google, or you can look at the clock on howrse and work it out.
the golden apple lets you change the coat of any of your horses. if you give it to a house that can only have one colour coat, then i don't think it will work.

A horse will age when you open its page for the first time each day. After a few days without critical actions such as feeding and grooming, the horse will die. A simple way is to only work certain horses each day if you have too many. Or you can just feed, groom, bed, and onto the next one.
Humans get kidnapped, horses get stolen. Yes, this used to be a big problem when horses were needed for work and transportation. It was at one time a hanging crime in the US.
Well you can wait for one of your horses to die :) or... well ... get a cheep horse you don't really like and age them a bunch of times without taking care of them... it's barbaric I know but it will work :(
