I have a 1990 Civic DX with the same problem. I was told by a tranny shop that this is a somewhat common problem and Honda makes a gear kit that the shop can install to fix the problem. They never told me what the cost was though, but I am guessing somewhere around $4-500? I know just to take the trans out and reinstall was $225 + parts.
