Verizon uses CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access). It sometimes will connect to GSM(Global Standard for Mobile Communication) if used in countries with providers that Verizon has negotiated an agreement with that uses GSM technology. Roaming charges will apply!

On most of their phones, yes. I think there are (or were) a couple that were a combination of CDMA and GSM that they called "world phones." The Motorola Z6C was one that I know of. I'm not sure of their current lineup.

No they do not, Verizon wireless is a cdma network, that does not use a sim card with their celphones. cdma may be overlooked sometimes but it is one of the best and clearest working network, and it provides all the trendy smart phones a person desires.

Can Verizon wireless sim cards be interchanged with other Verizon phones that use sim cards without having to activate a new phone?

No. The only Verizon Wireless phones that use SIM cards are Global Phones. SIM cards are only used for the GSM technology. Verizon Wireless runs off of the CDMA technology. So... if you switch the SIM card, the phone still won't work because it has nothing to do with the CDMA and that's what Verizon Wireless works off of. HOWEVER, you can activate a Verizon Wireless phone on an existing account by dialing *228 pressing SEND then choosing option 3.
