Best Answer

No they are not silver, only the 1942 through 1945 nickels with large reverse mintmarks are 35% silver. All other US nickels, regardless of date, are made of an alloy of 25% nickel and 75% copper.

No. Unlike dimes, quarters, and half dollars, most US nickels never contained precious metals. They're made of an alloy of 25% nickel and 75% copper.

The only US nickels to contain any silver are the "War Nickels' that were struck in 35% silver from late 1942 through 1945; they can be identified by the large mintmarks above the dome of Monticello on the reverse.

If you stop to think about it for a few seconds, nickels are twice the size of dimes, so a 90% silver 1964 nickel would have been worth 20 cents!

The only US nickels to have silver are the "War Nickels" of 1942-1945 so a 1964 Jefferson nickel has no silver.
