On a 1996 Ford Ranger : The 2.3 litre four cylinder engine has a timing BELT The 3.0 and 4.0 litre OHV , V6 engines use ( 1 ) timing CHAIN
The 3.8 liter V6 engine in a 1996 Ford Mustang has a timing CHAIN
Unless your Ranger XLT has a 4 cylinder engine which it should not, all V6 Ford Rangers have a timing chain and not a belt.
The 3.3L engine has a timing chain....not a timing belt.... The 3.0L engine has a timing belt......
For a 1996 Ford Taurus : The 3.0 litre " Vulcan " V6 engine has ( 1 timing CHAIN ) The 3.0 litre " Duratec " V6 engine has ( 1 timing CHAIN to each cylinder head , so there are 2 timing CHAINS )
The 3.0 or the 3.8 engine uses a chain.
