Well, by following the movie, it's clear only one Godfather was and could be expected to be on time to any Christening.....or other event for that matter. Answer No - or at least it is at the discretion of the minister conducting the service. In baptism the child's parents may choose several godparents, and provided the minimum number are present (this depends upon the denomination - it might be two, three or four) then the service can go ahead, minus the late Godparent, who can join in after making his or her vows separately, when he or she arrives. However, if there is a real problem - for example, family have come from a long distance, or a venue has been booked at a particular time for a celebration afterwards or any number of other mitigating circumstances, any other baptised adult can stand in and be a 'godparent by proxy' and make the vows (with suitable amendments) on behalf of the other godparent, until he or she arrives.
