What is the definition of canonization in the Catholic Catechism?

Canonization means that the Pope makes a beautified person a saint. The answer above is partially correct; however, there is a little more to it. A lay person can only be canonized after they have performed three miracles and these miracles have to be documented by the Catholic Church. When that has been done, then this person will be canonized a Saint. I'm not sure, but I think one of the last people to be canonized a Saint was Mother Theresa. Canonization is the lengthy process by which a candidate's sainthood is verified by the Catholic Church. There has to be no doubt that the person is in Heaven.

What were the three miracles that St. Nicholas performed?

Miracles were not required for declaring a person a saint in the early years of Christianity. The person would have been declared a saint by popular acclamation to a bishop based on the lives and merits of the candidate. This was especially true if the person died the death of a martyr as it was felt that making this ultimate sacrifice for Our Lord would be an automatic designation of that person as a saint. Even today, miracles are not always a requirement for canonization, especially in the case of martyrs. Nicholas is reported to have revived three young boys who had been murdered and stuffed into a barrel of brine.
