Actually both the requirements that are mentioned is important. Battery backup will allows you to access you Netbook for a long duration and light weight will let you carry your Netbook. I would advise for the Intel atom based processors Netbook and it is a great little piece of technology and also the Intel brand associated to it. Being a lightweight and easy to take anywhere you can enjoy reading ebooks, playing games and many other work that is associated with your work. Intel Netbooks is much lesser price as compare with Laptop and with a great battery life (approx. to 10- 12 Hrs.) and also physical keyboard which will help in typing.
You can't really extend it much. But taking extra care to not drop the battery might help. Another tip is to immediately remove the cord when charging after the battery life is 100% and to charge only when the battery life is almost nil. My dad gave me these tips and it seems to work. for sure If you connecting your netbook with Ipod via usb i don;t think your drain the battery! Just go for lowest brightness settings in your netbook it will help if you think its happening so!
