Remember M.A.L.E and M.I.P

Metal

Atoms

Lose

Electrons

Metal

Ions

Positive

However, non-metals gain electrons when forming ionic bonds, in order to gain a stable electron configuration. Because they gain electrons, they form negatively charged ions.
