A diagnosis of Fibromyalgia alone is often not enough to gain approval for disability. Generally, the disability examiners will want to see proof of other co-morbid issues that might give more validity to your claims of chronic pain and fatigue. A new ruling in July of 2012 has increased the viability of Fibromyalgia being considered a disability in itself. However, you will need to show strong evidence that all other possibilities have been ruled out and that your widespread pain and fatigue has severely limited your activity.

If you are considering filing for disability, be sure to keep good records of all of your doctor visits and diagnoses. Keep records of when you missed work and for what reasons and how often you felt you could not perform normal activities. It is good to keep a daily journal of your activities and what you felt you could not do due to your pain.

It's not a black and white condition so neither is the disability. Depending on your diagnosis your doctor may or may not recommend that you can't work otherwise disability benefits won't consider it.

Fibromyalgia can be or become a very serious issue over time, specially if not properly treated. It is a condition that insurance companies do not want to insure on an individual basis.

If you have fibromyalgia, try to obtain income protection through work as it will be the best option for you to obtain coverage. Group Disability insurance can be offered on a guaranteed standard issue basis, meaning that anyone can get it. However, there are certain guidelines that must be met.
