I have been a novice "gym rat" for over 20 years. I have used treadmills and elyptical machines in every style and by every equipment manufacturer out there. I have found that it really doesn't matter which one you chose -- elyptical or treadmill -- as long as you spend at least 20 minutes on either.

It takes the body about 20 minutes to start burning callories and if you can work your way up from there, you should be pleased with the results. For years, I used to do both...20 minutes on the elyptical machine and 20 minutes on the treadmill. I am not recommending you do that, but for me, it was "fun" or at least challenging.

The key with any workout is keep it interesting, change it up -- it really does matter if you vary your routine -- keep your body guessing as to what you are going to do next.

Example: I used to start every workout with 100 crunches. Soon, I was doing 300 crunches and one time....for kicks...I lept going. I got up to 800 in a single workout. Was I getting cut? Was the last 500 (or even the first 700) really doing me any good whatsoever? Probably not. My body quickly adjusted and knew I was going to do those 300 crunches and I gained nothing after the first week or two.

Point is...CHANGE your workout. Make it iteresting. Challenge yourself with completely different excercises....not by doing more repetitions of the same excercise.

By the way, a good quality treadmill and good pair of shoes are great for bad/week knees. If you experience popping or bone on bone grinding...STOP!! Don't do that excercise and consult a physician if it persists.

Cheers!

Treadmills are typically more effective in burning calories than elliptical machines, due to their offering more impact. However, elliptical machines still provide a good workout and are actually easier on the joints.

The amount of calories you burn is based on how much effort you put in, how efficient you are at the exercise and how much you weigh. A 150 pound woman on an elliptical burns between 250-300 calories in 30 minutes of moderate exercise. The same woman on a treadmill will burn around 300 for moderate exercise.

If you pushi it hard enough and long enough - sure. But it engages the upper body even less than an upright bike does.

The exercise machine that will burn the most calories is the one that you use the hardest and longest. Elliptical or recumbent doesn't matter.

What are some benefits of using a treadmill for working out?

As with any excercise, you're burning calories and hopefully getting your heart rate up. An advantage with a treadmill is that you can do it no matter the weather and if you get bored, it's easy to watch tv or even read a book.

What Biking Equipment Will You Need?

>Basic Elliptical Machine RoutineWhen it comes to burning calories and losing weight, a great number of people head to their nearest gym or fitness facility in order to jump on one of the cardiovascular machines like the treadmill or the elliptical. Although both work to increase the heart rate, burn calories and focus on the upper body, there are also distinct difference as well. Here are both the pros and cons of both pieces of equipment to determine which is better in a face-off of treadmill vs elliptical.Pros of the TreadmillThe greatest advantage is that anyone can use the treadmill regardless of their fitness level or athletic ability. It can provide a great workout for a beginner who is simply walking at a slow pace or provide a fitness workout for a very fast runner who wants to tackle speed training. The treadmill often has an incline which can target new muscle groups as well as the core of the body, which many people want to tone.Cons of the TreadmillAlthough the treadmill is a wonderful piece of equipment there are some cons as well. First is the fact that treadmills can be dangerous if you are unsure of the right speed or your own fitness levels. Accidents can occur when the speed is too high for the user and might be a problem for beginners who are new to using gym equipment. In addition, it can be painful for those with ankle, hip or knee injuries.Pros of the EllipticalThe elliptical is very simple to use and understand and is safe for anyone to use. It provides a lower impact workout while still burning calories. It is safer for people with injuries or join problems to use, making it superior in that way to the treadmill. The resistance can be increased in order to get a better strength workout.Cons of the EllipticalUnfortunately, the elliptical does not work the core as much as a treadmill does. In addition, the movement is unnatural and while it does burn calories it does not carry over to the athletic field in any real way.

Is burning calories the same as digesting the calories?

No, Digesting calories is taking in calories, Burning calories is working off calories.

Can you burn more calories using the elliptical or the bike?

When it comes to burning calories, your heart rate is much more important than what it is that you are doing. If you can reach and sustain the same heart rate for the same amount of time you will burn pretty much the same amount of calories regardless of activity. The activity that burn the most calories is the one that offers the best balance between increased heart rate and the time you is able to keep going.Let's say that the elliptical boosts your heart rate from 80 to 150, but that you're only able to keep it up for 10 minutes. That's 70x10=700 extra heart beats and associated calorie useNow let's say that the treadmill boosts your heart rate from 80 to 130, but that you're able to keep it up for 30 minutes. That's 50x30=1500 extra heart beats and associated calorie use.In this case the treadmill would have used up more calories.

What works better walking or using an elliptical machine?

Works better for what? Try to be a little more secific with your questions if possible :o) Although the eliptical walker is a good machine for those that need a low impact alternative to jogging, running ect you can burn just as many if not more calories walking. The added benifit of actually walking over using the eliptical machine is the it helps stregthen tendons and ligaments as well as promots increased bone density which will help avoid broken bones. REMEMBER: To get the most out of walking always ensure your arms are active as well, just like they are on the elliptical and that you are walking at a pace that is challenging you. This will help maximise calorie expenditure.

When running on a treadmill are you really burning as many calories as shown?

Usually. Running is a really good exercise because it's considered high intensity compared to low intensity workouts e.g situps, so you will work of calories quickly.

Does treadmill count as a strength training machine?

A treadmill is more of a cardio machine that will help keep you in shape by keeping you're heart rate up and burning calories. If you don't have any strength training machines sit ups, push ups, and squats, are great for building muscles.
