REGULATIONS FOR TAKING A PET DOG OR CAT TO TAIWAN

PETS ARRIVING FROM RABIES FREE COUNTRIES

Dogs or cats arriving from rabies-free countries of Japan, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Iceland and Taiwan

Your pet must have a 15 digit ISO 11784 compliant pet microchip and vaccinated against rabies when at the age of at least 90 days old, and the period between the day of vaccination and the day of shipment shall be no less than 30 days and no more than one year. If your pet' microchip is not ISO compliant, you can bring your own microchip scanner.

The importer shall apply for an Import Permit from Hsinchu Branch or Kaohsiung Airport Inspection Station of Kaohsiung Branch at least 30 days prior to shipment.

A USDA (or CFIA) accredited veterinarian must then complete the Taiwan Veterinary Certificate for endorsement by the USDA or CFIA if traveling from the United States or Canada. If you are not traveling from either of these countries, the Governing Authority of your country should endorse the forms. The rabies vaccination certificate shall be in Chinese, English or bilingual and should be included.

PETS ARRIVING FROM COUNTRIES WITH A LOW INCIDENCE OF RABIES SUCH AS THE UNITED STATES AND EU COUNTRIES

The microchip and vaccination requirements are similiar to those for rabies free countries except your pet must be vaccinated between 6 months and one year prior to travel. In the case of a booster vaccination, the animal shall have been vaccinated no more than one year prior to shipment.

A Blood Titer Test is also required at least 180 days but not more than 2 years prior to travel.

The importer shall apply for an Import Permit and make reservation of the post-entry quarantine space from Hsinchu Branch or Kaohsiung Airport Inspection Station of Kaohsiung Branch at least 30 days prior to shipment.

Pets entering Taiwan must be microchipped with the ISO 11784/11785 15 digit pet microchip.

Does a US service dog entering Taiwan need to be quarantined or can it accompany its owner into the country with valid rabies shot documentation?

Taiwan has adopted policies similar to those of the European Union. An animal being imported from a rabies infected country, such as the United States, must not only have a rabies certificate, but must also be microchipped and have a rabies titer. It usually takes about six months of preparation for the titer and other paperwork to be able to import an animal from a rabies infected country to a rabies-free country (like Taiwan) without quarantine. Failure to have all the paperwork in order before arrival can result in lengthy and expensive quarantines, refusal of entry to the animal, or euthanasia.
