Since the grasshopper undergoes gradual (incomplete) metamorphisis, it goes from egg, to nyphm, to larger nyphm, then adult. In the nyphm stage, a grasshopper has no wings or very small wings. When in adult stage, it's wings are fully grown and the grasshopper goes out to continue the cycle.

The young of a housefly is a maggot (eats rotting meat). It becomes an adult housefly after going through a pupae (chrysalis) stage.
The young of a grasshopper is a nymph (eats vegetation). It is a miniature version of an adult grasshopper, but is without the wings of an adult (the wings develop later).

A newly hatched grasshopper (known as a nymph) looks like a miniature version of an adult grasshopper. It does not go through a change like a caterpillar does to become a butterfly.
