I think they have more of a friend relationship. Seeing as Cloud and Tifa later become a couple and adopted Denzel. And Aerith is seen walking with Zack into a light.(suggesting they resumed their relationship)

I do think the authors intended CxA. It's a better story. More of, you might say, a Final FANTASY. Cloud and Aeris were the couple from the start--regardless of past crushes and love, the true intended couple of FFVII was indeed Cloud and Aeris. This is hinted more than enough times in the Complitation. Including the infamous quote, "Cloud carries his own undying feelings for Aerith, even to this very day..." and that Aerith is the woman forever engraved in Cloud's heart. Plus, Cloud wants to meet Aeris in the Promised Land--a place that promises supreme happiness. Cloud's obvious supreme happiness lies with Aerith.
Did aerith know when Zack died?
It is believed that Aerith did know, which is why she looked up towards the sky in Crisis Core and why she became close to Cloud in VII since Cloud had Zack's memories. So, yes, probably.
