Theoretically, any antibiotic can cause a yeast infection. Antibiotics assist the body in eliminating infections caused by bacteria (not viruses or funguses i.e. yeast). The vagina is normally full of bacteria. These bacteria live in harmony with each other and are normally harmless. Their presence keeps other bacteria or fungus from running rampant. When a woman takes an antibiotic for an infection elsewhere in the body the antibiotic affects all bacteria in that woman. Due to this affect the vaginal balance of bacteria is lowered, thus allowing for yeast to over grow. This overgrowth is called a yeast infection. The yeast infection can be cured by returning the vaginal environment back to its "normal" state. To cure this you must take an antifungal agent by mouth, vaginal suppository or cream. Some feel that eating 6-8 oz of yogurt daily while taking antibiotic therapy may help to reduce the potential for these type of opportunistic infections to occur.
