Well, the other two answerers really like to...'express' themselves, but yes, Byakuya made a promise to Hisana kuchiki that he would take in Rukia and protect her, but during the time of Rukia's execution he was confused whether or not to keep the promise he made to Hisana or keep his loyalty to Soul society intact.

∙ 11y agoNo, he does not. His wife Hisana asked him before she died to protect with his life. Rukia reminds Byakuya a lot about Hisana. As I recall in episode 197 at the very end when Byakuya defeats the 8 Espada he says "I do not remember ever telling you I will kill you because I am a soul reaper, the reason why I am killing you is, simply its because you aimed your blade at my only pride, now this is your fate" When he said that he was referring to Rukia.

∙ 12y agoNo! Of course not! That's his percious sister-in-law! But he's very serious about his pride and doin' what the law wants. So if she is doin' somethin' to distrube that then he'll put a stop to it.
In a couple cases Byakuya has actually saved her life (four times). I beleive the most recent one was when they were in Heuco Mundo, and Byakuya wanted to protect her from Evil Kaien. :3

Yes of course he saves her many times and he protects her. In episode 95, he stays with her when she was injured and i don't think it was because "he respects laws". He don't confess it, but it's obvious that he fights Karia because he attacks Rukia. He loves her as a big brother not only because of his promise to Hisana.

I don't know but if you go to episode 54 and go down to 53, 52, etc, you'll probably find it that way :) Oh and by the way, episode 54 is the episode that Rukia gets saved so yeah, Ichigo saves her and then Renji comes and takes Rukia away to a safe place. Then all the Lieutenants are ordered to kill Ichigo but then he defeats them with his own bare hands. So then he attacks Byakuya. No, Byakuya's death will never be shown in the manga or anime, as he is a main character, being Ichigo's rival and the brother-in-law of Rukia Kuchiki.To the answerer below, Byakuya and Kenpachi will never fight directly, unless Kenpachi assaults his pride of Rukia Kuchiki and the Kuchiki clan, or unless Kenpachi becomes an enemy of the Soul Society.
